Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the most critical asset for your local search visibility. If the foundation is weak, no amount of reviews or photos will save you. In this module, we cover the core settings that dictate whether you show up in the Local Map Pack.
1. Claiming and Verifying Your Profile
Before you can optimize anything, you must have ownership of your profile. Many businesses in Santa Clarita have unclaimed profiles or profiles managed by former employees or agencies.
Ownership is Crucial
Verification Methods: Google has become much stricter with verification to combat spam. You may be asked to:
- Receive a postcard at your business address (less common now).
- Receive a phone call or text to your business number.
- Provide a video recording of your business location, equipment, and proof of management (very common for service-area businesses).
- Connect via Google Search Console if your website is already verified.
2. Choosing Your Primary Category
Your Primary Category is the single most important ranking factor for your Google Business Profile. It tells Google exactly what you are and heavily influences the keywords you will rank for.
The Rule: Be as specific as possible. Don't choose "Contractor" if you are a "Roofing Contractor." Don't choose "Medical Clinic" if you are a "Pediatrician."
If your business does multiple things (e.g., HVAC and Plumbing), you must choose the one that brings in the most revenue or is your highest priority as the primary category. The other can be a secondary category.
3. Selecting Secondary Categories
You can add up to 9 secondary categories. These help you rank for additional, related searches.
Category Dilution Myth
Pro Tip: Look at the top 3 competitors in your local market. What secondary categories are they using? You can often find hidden opportunities by analyzing their profiles.
4. Business Name, Address, and Phone (NAP)
Consistency is key here. Your NAP information on your GBP must match the information on your website and across other directories (like Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places).
- Business Name: Use your real, legal business name or the name on your signage. Do not stuff keywords into your name (e.g., "Bob's Plumbing - Santa Clarita Emergency Plumber"). This is against Google's guidelines and can lead to a suspension.
- Address: Use your exact physical address. If you are a Service Area Business (SAB) and operate out of your home, you must hide your address to comply with guidelines.
- Phone Number: Use a local Santa Clarita area code (661) if possible. It sends a stronger local signal than an 800 number. If you use call tracking, put the tracking number as the primary number and your real local number as the secondary number.
5. Service Areas (For SABs)
If you travel to your customers (like a mobile detailer or a roofer), you are a Service Area Business. You can define up to 20 service areas.
Best Practices:
- Don't set your service area to the entire United States or all of California if you only serve the Santa Clarita Valley. Keep it realistic to where you can actually drive within a couple of hours.
- Add specific cities and zip codes: Santa Clarita, Valencia, Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, Castaic, Stevenson Ranch.
- Setting a large service area does not guarantee you will rank in those distant areas. Proximity to the searcher still matters immensely.
