Google wants to send searchers to active, thriving businesses. If your profile hasn't been updated in 6 months, it sends a signal that you might be closed or neglectful. In this module, we'll cover how to use Posts, Q&A, and Messaging to prove your business is highly active.

    1. Mastering Google Posts

Google Posts act like a mini social media feed directly on your search results page. While they aren't a massive direct ranking factor, they are a strong conversion factor and keep your profile looking fresh.

    Types of Posts

    • Updates: General news, recent projects, or helpful tips. Good for weekly engagement.
    • Offers: Promotions or discounts. These stand out with a yellow tag and a clear expiration date.
    • Events: Open houses, webinars, or community events you are hosting or sponsoring.

    The 7-Day Rule

Historically, Google Posts expired after 7 days. While they now stay visible longer, the best practice is still to post at least once a week to ensure a fresh post is always visible at the top of your profile.

    2. Seeding the Q&A Section

The Q&A section on your Google Business Profile is crowdsourced. Anyone can ask a question, and anyone (including the public) can answer it. This can lead to misinformation if you aren't paying attention.

The Strategy: You don't have to wait for customers to ask questions. You can (and should) ask and answer your own questions.

    • Identify FAQs: Take the top 5 questions your sales or support team gets asked.
    • Post the Questions: Log in and post the questions yourself.
    • Answer Them Professionally: Provide clear, helpful answers. This prevents the public from guessing and provides immediate value to searchers.

    3. Direct Messaging (Chat)

Google allows customers to message you directly from your profile. This feature can drive high-intent leads, but it comes with a strict rule: Response Time Matters.

If you turn on messaging, Google tracks your average response time. If you consistently take longer than 24 hours to reply, Google may automatically disable the feature on your profile to protect the user experience.

    • Set Up Auto-Replies: Create an automated welcome message acknowledging the chat and setting expectations (e.g., "Thanks for reaching out! We typically reply within 1 hour during business hours.").
    • App Integration: Ensure the Google Maps app is installed on your phone or your GBP is connected to your CRM so you never miss a notification.

    Module 4 Action Items

    • Create Your First Post

Publish an 'Update' post featuring a recent project, tip, or news item.

    • Seed 3 Q&As

Write and answer the top 3 most common questions your business receives in the Q&A section.

    • Review Messaging Settings

If you can commit to fast replies, turn on Messaging and set up an auto-reply.

    • Schedule Next Week's Post

Put a recurring task on your calendar to publish a new Google Post every week.
